Scotchtown Chapter was named for the historic site “Scotchtown,” the home of Patrick Henry in Hanover County, Virginia.
In 1717, Charles Chiswell built the house on a 9,976 acre grant in what was then the western part of New Kent County. Patrick Henry bought Scotchtown and 960 acres in 1771. Henry was living at Scotchtown when he gave his famous “Liberty or Death” speech at St. John’s Historic Church in Richmond.
The house was acquired by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in 1958. The Scotchtown Chapter furnished a bedroom in the house in 1960. The Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution restored and furnished the parlor as the state project of Mrs. Frederick Tracy Morse during her term of office as State Regent.
